Game Closet 11 – Hayley & Veronica of Storybrewers Roleplaying

Game Closet 11 – Hayley & Veronica of Storybrewers Roleplaying

This show is a Proud and vibrant member of the RPG Academy Network. Check out the other shows on the network like a personal favorite of mine, She’s A Super Geek. Emily & Senda invite notable guests onto their show to play silly (and sometimes very serious) rpgs and to highlight the many contributions women have made to our hobby. It’s great fun, and their show introduced me to some of my favorite creators and personalities. Just whatever you do, don’t bring up pandas… wait who’s there? WAIT NO NOT THE GLITTER!!!
Hello friends, and welcome back to another wonderful episode of Game Closet, the podcast highlighting queer and LGBT+ people in the tabletop games community. We have two wonderful guests this week, the Storybrewers, all the way from Australia, to tell you about their new Kickstarter. I talk with Hayley & Veronica about harsh worlds, the power of mythology, and their project, Alas For The Awful Sea. Alas is running it’s kickstarter right now, and they’ve already funded in just a few short days. I’ll have a link to support their project in the show notes. I do have one quick announcement which is that Sad Things On Index Cards, my zine about microgames, just opened submissions for its second issue. The theme is Augury, and all profits will go towards Planned Parenthood. To learn more on how to submit games, essays, poetry, or art, visit the link above.

Hello friends! I apologize in advance that the introduction for this episode will be lengthy but we have some big news to talk about! I am incredibly overjoyed to announce that Game Closet is extremely PROUD (Pun intended) to be a member of the RPG Academy Network! For those unfamiliar, The RPG Academy is a network of podcasts and other gaming resources with a focus on enriching your play experiences and learning more about our hobby. It’s helmed by the flagship show, The RPG Academy! Michael and Caleb are joined by wonderful friends and guests to run actual plays, try out new systems, and have discussion and round tables about a variety of interesting subjects. I’ve been listening to the RPG Academy for a long time, and really enjoy their dedication to go beyond the intro level while still remaining accessible for newcomers to the hobby. The RPG Academy was nominated for an Ennie award in 2016 and while they were robbed of their deserved victory (I cast my vote for them I’ll tell you that) their place in the nominees was well deserved. Not only is their flagship program worth listening to, there are plenty of other shows on the network. Over the next few episodes of Game Closet, we’ll promote them one by one so you can get a better feel for each of them.

The second announcement is much smaller, and that is the new projects under the Riverhouse banner coming in 2017. The first project is called From The Jackals To The Shepherds and is a new podcast launching Monday, March 20th, the first day of Spring. This show is a micropodcast and will be a week-by-week playthrough of Avery Alder’s The Quiet Year. Expect a teaser episode in the coming months. The other project I’m starting this year is Sad Things On Index Cards, or STOIC for short. Stoic is a zine about small games and microRPGs. We accept games, nonfiction essays, poetry, and visual art, with each issue having a unique theme. The first issue’s submissions have already been gathered and I’ll have news on how to get your hands on it soon. Keep your eyes out for more info on this first issue, and the call for submissions for the next one.
Ho boy so that’s all my news for this episode! Joining me in the Game Closet this episode Is Courtney Brooke Davis, comics writer and gaming friend. I met Courtney at Geekly Con 2016 where we briefly chatted about hypersexuality in nerd spaces and her experiences with it while identifying as asexual. We also get to chat a bit about how tropes are used sometimes to skirt around addressing issues, and we do also get to geek out about archaeology. With that long winded intro out of the way I’ll get out of your hair and toss it over to the interview part of the show.
